Maternal and Neonatology

Neonatology is a department of the Maternal and Neonatology directorate that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill or premature newborn. 

The Maternal and Neonatology Unit at Rwamagana Level II Teaching Hospital provides comprehensive care for mothers and newborns, ensuring safe pregnancy, delivery, and postnatal services, as well as specialized newborn care to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Services Provided:

  • Antenatal care (ANC) and high-risk pregnancy monitoring
  • Safe delivery services (normal and assisted deliveries)
  • Postnatal care for mothers and newborns
  • Neonatal care and monitoring of newborns
  • Newborn resuscitation services
  • Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) for low birth weight babies
  • Management of neonatal complications and infections
  • Breastfeeding support and maternal counseling
  • Referral of critical maternal and neonatal cases
